Narwhals are Magic.

Now with proof!  Secrets of the narwhal’s tusk have recently been revealed in research headed by Martin Nweeia, a practicing dentist and clinical instructor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, who just happens to also be a member of the Vertebrate Zoology Department of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. With a team of researchers/coauthors, including Jim Mead, Vertebrate Zoology Curator Emeritus and Charlie Potter, Marine Mammals Collection Manager, Nweeia just published a paper in the journal The Anatomical Record about the discovery of neural pathways that run from the narwhal’s tusk to its brain. The arctic whale’s unicorn-like tusk acts as a sensor, specifically detecting variations in water salinity. Read more on the Smithsonian Science blog, or see the original article at Anatomical Record (You might want to head to your local library to see if they have access since it’s behind a paywall).
There are some pretty great images of narwhal’s over on the Biodiversity Heritage Library’s Flickr page, too.

Just thought I’d share this charming piece of graffiti from near my home.
By the way, this is the ONLY women’s library in the country, it has only women’s work in it and also serves as a sort of feminist museum. They’re affiliated with a university close by and hold regular events such as workshops and talks on subjects like the poetry of immigrant women of colour or the representation of mental health in women’s literature. Its also due to be closed down by the Conservatives.

Can men go in and borrow books written by women?

Yeah, totally, they even do events for men by women on intro to feminism, rape culture stuff sometimes!

i think this is a perfect representation of english society.

"Children are required to be in school, where their freedom is greatly restricted, far more than most adults would tolerate in their workplaces. In recent decades we’ve been compelling them to spend ever more time in this kind of setting, and there’s strong evidence that this is causing psychological damage to many of them. And as scientists have investigated how children naturally learn, they’ve realized that kids do so most deeply and fully, and with greatest enthusiasm, in conditions that are almost opposite to those of school….Most people assume that the basic design of today’s schools emerged from scientific evidence about how children learn. But nothing could be further from the truth. Schools as we know them today are a product of history, not research. …. Research has shown that people of all ages learn best when they are self-motivated, pursuing answers to questions that reflect their personal interests and achieving goals that they’ve set for themselves. Under such conditions, learning is usually joyful. The evidence for all of this is obvious to anyone who’s watched a child grow from infancy to school age. Through their own efforts, children figure out how to walk, run, jump, and climb. They learn from scratch their native language, and with that, they learn to assert their will, argue, amuse, annoy, befriend, charm, and ask questions. ….
They do all of this before anyone, in any systematic way, tries to teach them anything. This amazing drive and capacity to learn does not turn itself off when children reach five or six. But we turn it off with our coercive system of schooling.”

No guys really. SIGN THIS PETITION!! This could end roleplaying, fanfictions, fanart, game reviews, you name it! THIS COULD SHUT DOWN TUMBLR!

The petition is found RIGHT HERE

sign it.

Since no one in this post, or the petition decided to actually explain this one does, I’ll give you the cliffnotes.
Basically, what this allows companies to do is remove websites that have any sort of content on their site without their permission lock, stock, and barrel, and gives them them the right to then sue any and all users of said infringing site with a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
What that means is that sites like Deviantart, Tumblr, Fanfiction.net, any site at all, can now be suspended and unable to be accessed without trial.
It also means that if you post a gif of a movie that you don’t own to Tumblr, you can now be fined or face up to five years in prison.
That also goes for fanfiction you might have posted, an rp blog you might have, a sound clip on a youtube video…
If you name it, simply having those things on a websites will have them shut down and removed from the DNS listing BEFORE they have a trial or are notified as to WHY they are being shut down.
Then, while they are shut down, you can be sued for having posted things on that website that you do not technically own.
So if you actually, you know, give a shit about your internet, your gifs, your fanfiction, your rp blogs, or any content that you don’t own.
THEN SIGN THIS.
DON’T JUST SIT BACK AND WAIT AROUND HOPING YOU WON’T BE PAYING THE COURT COSTS WHEN YOU GET SUED BY WARNER BROTHERS FOR POSTING HARRY POTTER GIFS OR DISNEY FOR POSTING FANART OF FROZEN.
THIS IS SERIOUS SHIT PEOPLE.

ALSO JUST INCASE YOU GUYS DIDNT LOOK AT THE DATE YOU NEED TO SIGN THIS BY THE 19TH. THATS WENSDAY. WE DONT EVEN HAVE A WEEK WE HAVE LIKE FOUR DAYS TO GET 50,000 MORE SIGNATURES.

We’re a little over halfway there and it’s the 15th! COME ON EVERYONE! Don’t just reblog and hope everyone else is going to sign it and it’ll all work out. Go make an account and sign it, go make a freaking bunch of accounts and sign it, even if you never visit the site again just go do it! It’ll take only a few minutes, we have four days left to get this done. EVERY SINGLE SIGNATURE COUNTS!
EVERYONE on this site needs to get their acts together and go sign this, there are millions of us on this website, getting 100’000 signatures should be nothing for us, we should have had this done a while after it came out.
In the time it takes you to watch one cute animal video you could make an account, sign this and reblog so all your followers can do the same. Fandom blogs, art blogs, RP blogs, personal blogs, THIS EFFECTS US ALL! If this shit goes ahead you may not have a blog to come back to, there may be no Tumblr to come back to. It takes less than 5 minutes. Take the time and do it, don’t just hope that everyone else will do it.
Your one signature could make the difference between stopping this and it going ahead. Make an account, sign, reblog. We don’t have long left so let’s get the signatures we need. Out of millions of bloggers I’m sure 100’000 of us can take the time to sign it.

So dawns the 150th Day of the Gigapause.
We shall celebrate this event in the customary fashion by bathing in our own tears, and staring soulfully at the mspa website while tapping the f5 key in memory of simpler times in our youth when tricksters danced, mind controlled clowns hid in closets, green skullmen wore little bow ties and everybody died. Repeatedly.
Happy Anniversary!
